A Journey of Passion and Purpose
In 2016, my wife and I embarked on an unforgettable journey through Gujarat, Rajasthan, and its charming suburbs. This trip was not only a feast for the eyes but also an exploration of our shared passion for handcrafted artifacts. We have always admired the beauty of handmade products, so we sought out local artisans to collect unique pieces that spoke to our hearts.
During our travels, we discovered an abundance of beautiful, moderately priced handcrafted products made by skilled artisans. However, upon returning to Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, we were disheartened to find these same artifacts sold at exorbitant prices in malls and marketplaces.
Our conversations with artisans revealed a troubling reality: many were struggling to meet their basic needs due to a lack of marketplace opportunities and distance from potential customers. We learned that older artisans were leaving their crafts, while the younger generation, inheritors of these skills, were opting for other professions that promised better livelihoods. This generational shift threatened not only their survival but also the rich tapestry of Indian artistry that has been passed down through generations.
Realizing the urgent need to support these artisans and preserve their art forms, we contemplated ways to bridge this gap. However, balancing our demanding jobs at multinational companies made it challenging to act on this vision.
Then came the transformative year of 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, which served as a wake-up call. We recognized the critical need for uplifting Indian artisans and providing them a platform to showcase their crafts. Inspired by this realization, we decided it was time to take action.
In 2023, we officially launched India Handicraftz, an online platform dedicated to promoting Indian handicrafts, including handmade cushion covers, applique curtains, and more. Our journey is now driven by a mission to empower artisans, celebrate their craftsmanship, and connect them with craft lovers worldwide. Join us as we continue this journey, fostering a vibrant community that values authenticity, quality craftsmanship, and sustainable practices.
